The Essential Travel Apps

When we travel it's really important for us that we make the most of the weekend or the week that we're away. We want to make sure that we experience all the best things that a country or a city has to offer. In order to do this we use a range of different apps and services to do our research and book our plans. Below you'll find the best apps for booking tickets, finding the best restaurants and hotels, as well as apps that will make your days and nights in a foreign country easier.

The best apps for finding cheap flight tickets

SkyScanner - SkyScanner is a great app for travelers looking for a great deal on domestic and international flights. SkyScanner compares prices across millions of flights and hundreds of airlines. From there, users can even book flights directly from the app with provided links to travel agents or airlines. Flights can be filtered by airline, cabin class, price or takeoff and landing times, with weekly or monthly chart views to check out prices over time.

Momondo - Momondo is a great app for booking flights, hotels and car rental. Momondo has also launched their 'trip finder' which will help you figure out where you can go based on factors such as what your budget looks like, shopping, beaches, nature and skiing.

Hopper -  This app helps you find the best time to buy a flight deal by analyzing worldwide airfares daily and picking out the times when a price drops below its historic average. One of the coolest features is “Watch a Flight,” which will send you a push notification when the price of a given route tends to go down.

Getting around in a new city

TripAdvisor - One of our favorite tools to use before and during a trip to a new city. This app allows millions of users to rank restaurants, bars, hotels and sights on a five star system. This should help you figure out whether that restaurant that you're considering going to is really worth a visit or not. We mostly use TripAdvisor for restaurant and bar reviews, but this app will also help you figure out what cultural highlights you should see in the city you're going too.

Localeur - This app is like a guidebook in your pocket. This app helps you find the places that locals enjoy the most. Localeur will help you find the things that you absolutely have to see around a city from a local's point of view and not a tourists. Writers have their own profile on the app, so find people that have similar interests to you and follow their guides around the city that you're visiting.

CityMaps2Go - One of the most important things to have on you when wandering the streets of a new city or town is to know where you're going. CityMaps2Go let's you download the map of the place you're going to so that you know where you're going - when you're offline. The maps also show all the nearby bars, restaurants, hotels and museums.

Google Maps - This is kind of a no-brainer if you have wi-fi access or if you're roaming. Google Maps show's you where you're going and highlights all of the restaurants, bars, hotels and cultural highlights in a city. We usually make sure to pin locations on Google Maps when we find a wifi connection - these pins and directions can then be used when you're offline and wandering the streets.

Apps that are just good to have

Wi-Fi Finder - When you're out traveling you don't want to spend money on roaming charges. Enter - Wi-Fi Finder. This app helps you find all os the wifi networks in your area that are public. What it does is that it divides the networks into Paid and Free networks, which will help you find free wifi around the city.

Hotel Tonight - We always try to plan everything ahead before leaving on vacation, but if you're going on a roadtrip and you're not quite sure where you'll end up on a given night then you need to be able to find the best hotel deal you can - and fast. You might also get unlucky and miss a flight, which means you need to be able to find a hotel. This app helps you find hotel deals immediately and at the best possible prices.

XE Currency - A great app for currency converting. The app uses real-time currencies to calculate the exact conversion values. You can also use this app as a calculator when you're on the go.

Tipulator -  Going to a new country and not knowing the tipping etiquette or how much to tip at a restaurant or a café can be really annoying. Wee usually need to calculate exactly how much we should be tipping at a restaurant when traveling and that's there Tipulator comes in handy.

Entrain - It's almost impossible to avoid jetlag when going on a long trip. Entrain uses sleep science research to make sure that you regulate when you should be exposed to light/darkness. By putting in your regular sleep rhythm this app adjusts to the time zone that you're traveling to. The app will then give you all the information that you need to make sure that you're going to bed at the right time.
